The Neon Sky
In 1973, when I was nine, I saw the Milky Way for the first time from my family’s farm in High Springs, Florida. That night started a lifelong fascination with the sky.
Years later, while living with my bandmates in the California desert, I looked through a telescope for the first time. I wanted to capture what I was seeing and share it. In 2000, I bought my own telescope and modified a webcam for long-exposure astrophotography.
That pursuit became The Neon Sky. A single image can take 20–40 hours to photograph, revealing the color and structure of nebulae and star clusters. The Pleiades, Elephant’s Trunk, and Rosette were among the subjects I brought together for the series.
